Job description: Under the direction of the Track Staff Director, provides technical guidance to the Division on issues related to vehicle/track interaction and coordinates with FRA's Office of Research and Development to develop and implement research needs in this area, as well as other areas where additional research is needed to adequately address safety issues related to the track infrastructure.
Provides technical guidance pertinent to Federal standards governing the construction and maintenance of railroad tracks and the safety implications of a variance from those standards to groups of engineers and technicians concerned with such matters.
Evaluates technical and managerial aspects of the agency's track safety program to ensure effective application of rules, standards, adopted guidelines, procedural instructions, and advice governing railroad track safety throughout the Nation.
Evaluates the railroads use of existing non-destructive methods of track inspection such as ground penetrating radar and machine vision, and makes recommendations to improve the detection capabilities of these systems.
Conducts or participates in special investigations of highly controversial or sensitive matters involving railroad track for Office of Safety and by special arrangement, for other Federal agencies.
